Lab Instructions

 

In this lab you will learn about the features of DE 2 board, its ports and memory structure. You will erase and progam the board memeory and learn how to use the DE2 control panel. Please complete this lab by 2/5/07. This lab will not be graded.

After this lab you will gain confidence in simple tasks of programming the board, using the different memories and also get familiar with the LCD, LED and the seven segment displays.

To begin :

Take out the DE 2 board and connect it to a power supply using the power adapter supplied. Press the red button to turn on the board. Enjoy !

Next, you must plan on installing the software on your PC. Your lab PC's already have all the software installed so you need to do this only on your personal machines . Open the CD case inside the package and install the Quartus 2 version 5.1 and Nios 2 version 5.1 processor, in this order. If you have any previous version of Quartus 2 or Nios 2 on your PC, please uninstall them before beginning. After you installed the Nios processor, insert the DE2 CD and follow the instructions to install which appear on screen.

Explore the users guide of DE 2 and try to erase the default bitstream in Flash which is responsible for the fireworks on the board using Quartus 2 programmer.

Use the DE 2 control panel.exe to erase the SRAM, load data , use LEDs etc.

NOTE : The procedure to program the board and use control panel is given in chapter 3 of Users manual of DE 2, pages 14 to 26. You need to do the exercises upto and including section 3.4.
